The most common example found in UK homes is Anobium punctatum aka the Common Furniture Beetle, these pests attack timbers leaving tell tale 1-2 mm holes the surface of the wood and small piles of dust (Frass) This particular species is estimated to be resposible for 75% of timber damage.
The initial attack is made when an adult beetle lays eggs in small cracks on the timber surface. The resulting larvae that hatch will then bore into the wood in search of cellulose to feed on.
The larva will eventually create a chamber within the wood in which the next stage of development occurs, with the adult beetle will emerging after metamorphosis. The new adult will continue tunnelling through the wood as it attempts to exit the wood, creating a visible, albeit small, flight hole. The liberated adult will then seek to mate and start the whole process once more. The tunnels and chambers produced during this process will lead to the decay and weakening of timbers, if left unchecked the need for timber replacement may be necessary.
The identification of wood attacking insects is made difficult due to the many species involved, the numerous types of timber affected and the visible similarities involved in assessing timbers. The Garratt’s Damp & Timber guide to Identifying Woodworm in the Home may prove informative if not conclusive.
The need for timber replacement in cases of active infestation is very rare, most cases are treatable where necessary.
The required treatment will vary according to the insects present, fortunately the most common infestation, Common Furniture Beetle, is one the easiest to treat.
Spray treatments: The damage created by the Common Furniture Beetle does not penetrate the timber as deeply as some other species and can be eradicated with various spray treatments, some permitting a 1 hour re-entry period, others 4-5 hours.
Gel treatments: The Death Watch Beetle will require a more invasive, thorough treatment. The insect will burrow deeply and will be less susceptible to spray methods. The treatment will be likely to require paste injections into drilled holes and a surface application of a gel.
