There is a wide choice of timber treatment preservatives available and it is important to choose the right one for the job. Tar oil preservatives (such as creosote) are suitable for preserving fencing and other external woodwork such as half-timbering, outhouses, chicken houses and barns. They are cheap and easily applied by brush or spray. However, wood treated with tar oils cannot subsequently be painted, and tar oils have a strong, persistent smell. Tar oil timber treatment preservatives should not be used for greenhouses - their fumes can damage plants. Waterborne preservatives consist of salts, which are toxic to fungi and insects, dissolved in water.
Wood treated with such preservatives has no smell and once it is dry it can be painted with oil paints or with vinyl emulsions. Organic solvent preservatives contain chemicals toxic to fungi and insects, dissolved in an organic solvent - usually white spirit. They penetrate dry wood well (better than waterborne types) and once the solvent has evaporated, treated wood can be painted. When freshly applied they have some odour but this disappears. Wood treated with these preservatives gives off flammable vapours: keep all flames or electric sparks away from treated wood until the solvent has completely evaporated at least two days.
Emulsions are mayonnaise-like mixtures of an organic solvent-type preservative with water. They have been developed recently and can be applied thickly, giving a much heavier dose of fungicide to the wood than it is possible to obtain by simply brushing a liquid fungicide on to the surface. Emulsions are especially useful for treating large timbers which cannot be replaced without great cost. For instance, the ends of main beams which have slight wet rot, but which are still amply strong enough to support a floor, can be treated with these emulsions in situ.
Any timber which is in contact with the ground or which is exposed to persistently wet conditions should have the preservative impregnated deeply into it. Timber that has been treated commercially, either in a pressure cylinder or by prolonged diffusion process, can be purchased from many larger timber merchants. Two well-known treatments of this kind are called Tanalith and Celcure processes.
All other areas of woodwork can be treated by liberally brushing on several flowing coats of preservative. But if you are treating a considerable quantity of timber, it is worthwhile constructing a long, narrow, deep bath and partly filling this with preservative. The pieces of wood for treatment can then be totally immersed for about ten minutes by weighting them down with a metal bar. Carry out all sawing, planing, sanding, cross-cutting, boring or drilling before treatment, so that no untreated wood is exposed by subsequent woodworking. Always follow the preservative's safety warnings and wear rubber gloves when handling freshly treated timber.
