Sometimes you won't even know that you have wet walls, because they're hiding behind the sofa, which rarely gets moved. Sometimes they're not even hiding, I've been in homes where people's poor vision, has allowed mould and mildew to form on damp walls right in front of them.
Here's some professional advice specifically for homeowners who have damp walls that could be creating mould and mildew problems for their family. Move large pieces of furniture regularly to clean behind them and check for wet walls. If this furniture is too heavy to move, don't push it up against the wall, so that you can check these areas with a flashlight.
You will also need to check your basement and attic for moist walls. Usually confined areas like your basement, crawl space and attic will have a musty smell if there's any moisture for long periods of time. Usually well ventilated areas aren't going to have moisture problems, unless there's a lot of moisture in the air.
If you do have damp walls, get them repaired as soon as possible. Don't just fix the wall, make sure that you find the problem and make the necessary repairs. Fixing a damaged wall won't do you much good, unless you find out what caused the damage.
Damp walls can also cause wood rot and attract termites. If you really want some professional advice about damp walls, once you have found the damage, fix it.
